Tampa Bay Newport Practice Featured In Local Business Journal

By: Mark Rosenman
July 2nd, 2012

The West Florida practice of Newport Board Group is the subject of a feature article in the June 29th issue of Gulf Coast Business Review. The article contains excerpts from interviews with Newport Chairman Doug Tatum and West Florida Managing Director John Woelfel. It explains Newport’s focus on middle market companies that are “too big to be small and too small to be big.” It goes on to mention the practice’s plans to have 10 advisors by the end of the year and to deploy Newport’s proprietary software tool, Inc. Navigator, to help companies assess their leadership team and priorities. The article quotes Tatum, author of the acclaimed book No Man’s Land, about Newport’s focus on middle market companies: “We all love start-ups. But what about the existing firms that are adding more jobs? It’s really important to the country that we respect these kinds of companies.” In the piece Woelfel describes what makes Newport tick, saying: “we share a passion to help entrepreneurs take their company to a new level of growth.”

Navigator tools, which help a company’s top executives get aligned on their view of the business and its strategy. He cited statistics that top teams tend to be far less in agreement on the company’s plans and priorities than CEO’s think they are—and showed how use of Inc. No Man’s Land Designated One of Best Business Books of All Time

By: Mark Rosenman
June 2nd, 2012

Newport Board Group is driven by a passion to help emerging growth and mid-market companies take advantage of the opportunities of a dynamically changing business environment. Many of our firm’s frameworks are based on No Man’s Land, the award-winning book by our Chairman, Doug Tatum. Subtitled What To Do When Your Company Is Too Big To Be Small But Too Small To Be Big, it crystallizes Doug’s decades of experience leading and advising middle market growth companies. Since its publication several years ago, No Man’s Land has been the recipient of four National Best Business book awards. No Man’s Land has recently received the significant honor of being included in the updated version of The Best Business Books of All Time, by Jack Covert and Todd Sattersten. The Best Business Books of All Time is a careful selection based on the authors’ years of reading, evaluating and selling business books. The inclusion of No Man’s Land puts it the distinguished company of such classics as Good to Great and The Balanced Scorecard, among many others. See more information about The Best Business Books of All Time. See more about No Man’s Land. At the heart of No Man’s Land is the idea that every growing company must complete a difficult transition if it is to continue to expand. This transition has a clear beginning and end and requires a thoroughgoing rethinking of a company’s Market place, its Management, its economic Model and finally its access to capital markets i.e. its Money. The book contains a set of principles and guidelines, applicable to companies in every industry, which help entrepreneurial CEOs and their private equity sponsors overcome the inevitable challenges of growth. Newport has incorporated this framework into its approach to advising emerging companies on strategies to get the funding they need for growth and to develop their organizations. Newport Board Group congratulates Doug on this honor and is excited about working with Doug to expand our intellectual capital as we help our clients accelerate their growth and fulfill their potential.
