Newport Board Group partner and retail industry expert Helen Bulwik has been quoted several times recently in the San Francisco Chronicle about trends in the retail industry. One article discussed the entry of retail behemoth Amazon.com into the local fresh food delivery service industry. The piece noted that AmazonFresh, which has been delivering groceries, meat and seafood in its hometown, Seattle, for the past six years, is coming to the Bay Area as early as October, according to retail trade sources. The Chronicle quotes Bulwik as commenting she would describe the move by Amazon as a “land grab. Amazon has to keep getting into new products, and food is so important. And with all the warehouses they're building, they'll end up with more square footage than any retailer in the country."

To compete in today’s global marketplace, successful companies need a balance of both men and women to make critical strategic and operations decisions. But the lack of women on boards is dismal.
